Equinox Musings on the Balance of Writing and Publishing, Dreams and Purpose
A life coach tip I once heard about finding your purpose says: Notice what people most ask your advice for? The first time I remember an inordinate amount of people asking me for the same thing was in law school.
Spoiler alert: It had nothing to do with law.
This is random, but friends would ask me to hang their pictures in their apartment. It never occurred to me that this was a unique skill, nor something I could make money at. After all I was on my way to a successful law career.
When I settled into one of my first law jobs, I became the office’s official dream interpreter. Like hanging pictures, interpreting symbols came natural to me. Perhaps my office with its artfully-hung artwork and ambient lighting also helped provide the right vibe.
By then, my own dreams were giving me clues as to what I was good at: interiors. This led me to interior design school, which led me to feng shui. Fast forward to the first book I wrote—it was on the symbols of our home. Maybe there is something to that life coaching tip.
I’ve continued to use this measure for most things I’ve done in my career, i.e. when and what courses to offer. Lately, I’ve had a lot of people ask me publishing questions. Not as random as picture hanging since publishing is in my wheelhouse, but enough to put a fire under me to offer a publishing class.
What I’ve observed is that when people understand the business of writing, it frees their creativity, their craft. We have to know what our container is in order to be free of it. Otherwise, invisible lines keep us in a nebulous space of uncertainty.
If creativity is the yin, then business is the yang. Both are essential for the other to exist. This concept is particularly in focus right now as we are at the Equinox—when day and night are equal. What needs to be brought into balance will find its way during this time of year.
p.s. It’s a good time to straighten up those pictures on the wall.
If you’re writing needs more of the yang—the business side, then check out the class I’m offering on October 17th. I will be packing in a lot of information in two hours so everyone who registers will also receive a link to rewatch. I’ll be answering your questions and, as always, listening to what questions people ask me the most.
